2. Cloudy or muddy water after rain or snowmelt. Clean casings don’t care about weather. If your water turns turbid every spring melt, surface water is finding a path in through a crack or a bad seal.
3. Sudden change in water taste or smell. A new metallic, earthy, or chemical taste can mean shallow groundwater is mixing into your aquifer water.
4. Coliform bacteria that keeps coming back. You shock chlorinate, the test comes back clean, and three months later coliform is back. That pattern screams casing breach. The EPA’s private well guidance recommends annual bacteria testing for exactly this reason.
5. Pump failures ahead of schedule. Submersible pumps should run 10 to 15 years. If you’re replacing pumps every 4 or 5 years because sand keeps destroying the impellers, fix the casing or you’ll keep paying for pumps.
6. Dropping well yield. Sediment piling up in the bottom of the well buries the pump intake and chokes off flow.
7. Visible damage at the wellhead. Rust scale, a casing that wiggles, a top that’s been clipped by a tractor or snowplow, or a casing that sits less than 12 inches above grade. Surface damage usually means trouble below too.

Teresa runs a small horse property south of Quincy on a well drilled in 1979. She noticed grit in the stock tanks in March, figured it was just spring runoff, and let it ride. Casing liner (sleeve)
The workhorse of well casing repair. We lower a smaller-diameter PVC or steel liner inside the existing casing, past the damaged section, and seal it. The liner bridges cracks, holes, and corroded zones in one shot. You lose a little well diameter, which occasionally means downsizing the pump, but for most residential wells it’s a non-issue.
Casing patch (point repair)
For a single, well-defined breach, an expandable patch or short sleeve can seal just that spot. Cheaper than a full liner, but only worth it if the camera shows the rest of the casing is solid. Patching one hole in a casing that’s rusting everywhere is throwing money down the well.
Top section replacement
Freeze damage, vehicle strikes, and shallow corrosion often hit just the top 5 to 20 feet. How to Protect Your Casing (and Catch Damage Early)
You can’t stop steel from aging, but you can slow it down and catch problems while they’re still cheap.
Keep 12 inches of casing above grade, more if your spot drifts snow. Grade the soil so surface water runs away from the wellhead, never toward it. Keep vehicles, livestock, and heavy equipment away from the casing. A glancing blow from a tractor bucket cracks more casings than corrosion does in orchard country.
Put a real cap on it. A cracked or loose well cap lets insects, mice, and surface water straight into the casing. Test your water every year for bacteria and nitrates, since changes in water quality are often the first sign of a breach.
