Why Sand Shows Up in Well Water

Your well doesn’t pull water from an open underground lake. It pulls from saturated sand, gravel, and fractured rock. The only thing standing between that material and your plumbing is the well screen, a slotted section at the bottom of the casing that lets water in and keeps sediment out.

When sand starts coming through, one of four things is usually happening:

  1. The well screen has corroded, cracked, or worn through. This is the big one, especially in wells over 20 years old.
  2. The pump is set too close to the bottom of the well. It stirs up settled sediment and sucks it straight in.
  3. The pump is oversized or the well is being overpumped. Too much velocity pulls fine sand through a screen that would otherwise hold it back.
  4. The casing or well seal is damaged. Surface soil and runoff sneak in from above, which is also a contamination risk.

Around here, geology matters too. Much of the Columbia River valley sits on glacial outwash, which is basically layered sand and gravel. Well Screen Failure: The Number One Cause of Sandy Well Water

Well screens don’t last forever. Steel screens corrode. Slotted PVC can crack. And in aggressive water, which is common in parts of Chelan and Douglas counties, a screen can fail decades before the rest of the well does.

Here’s how it usually plays out. Corrosion opens up a slot that was sized to block sand. Now grains slip through every time the pump kicks on. The sand scours the screen opening wider, more sand comes through, and the failure accelerates. That’s why homeowners often say the grit “came out of nowhere.” It didn’t. It built slowly, then crossed a threshold.

How to tell it’s the screen

A few patterns point to screen failure rather than a pump or casing issue:

  • Sand appears when the pump first kicks on, then the water runs clearer
  • The amount of sand has been increasing over months
  • Your well is 20+ years old, or it was drilled with a steel screen
  • Sand grains are coarse and uniform, not fine silt or surface soil

You can’t usually replace a screen outright without major work, but you have real options:

  • Gravel pack rehabilitation. In some wells, redeveloping the gravel pack around the screen settles things down.
  • Drilling a new well. The last resort, reserved for wells where the casing itself is shot or the liner would choke off too much flow.

Screen and casing work overlaps a lot. If the camera shows damage above the screen, you may be looking at well casing repair instead of, or along with, a liner.

Other Causes Worth Ruling Out First

Before anyone quotes you a liner job, make sure the problem is actually the screen. We see plenty of “screen failures” that turn out to be a pump hung three feet too low.

Pump set too deep

Every well accumulates sediment at the bottom over time. If your pump sits within 10 to 15 feet of the bottom, it can pull that settled sand right up, especially when water levels drop in late summer. Wells around Leavenworth and Cashmere often run deep with modest storage, so a low-set pump is a common find. The fix can be as simple as raising the pump 10 or 20 feet. That’s a few hundred dollars in labor, not thousands.

Oversized pump or overpumping

A pump that moves more water than the well can comfortably supply creates high velocity at the screen. That velocity drags fine sand through openings that would hold at a gentler flow. This shows up a lot on irrigation setups, where someone upsized the pump to feed more zones. If your sand problem started right after a pump upgrade, this is your prime suspect. Damaged casing or well cap

If what you’re seeing is fine soil, silt, or sediment that spikes after rain or snowmelt, the problem may be up top, not down at the screen. A cracked casing or a loose, degraded well cap lets surface material wash in. That’s more than a grit problem. Surface water carries bacteria, nitrates, and whatever’s running off nearby orchards. The EPA recommends private well owners test annually and inspect the wellhead regularly for exactly this reason. Sand is an abrasive. Your pump impellers spin at 3,450 RPM, and every grain that passes through acts like sandblasting media. Pumps that should last 15 years die in 3 to 5 when they’re moving sand. Then the damage spreads downstream.

Solutions That Actually Work, From Cheapest to Biggest

Once the cause is diagnosed, here’s the toolbox, roughly in order of cost.

1. Raise the pump

If the pump is sitting in the sediment zone, lifting it solves the problem same-day. Cheap, fast, and surprisingly common.

2. Install a sand separator

A centrifugal sand separator mounts between the well and the pressure tank and spins sand out before it reaches your plumbing. It’s a great protection layer, and for wells that produce a small, stable amount of fine sand, it can be a permanent answer. It does not fix a failing screen, though. It buys time and protects equipment while you address the source.

3. Add filtration for fine sediment

For silt and fine particles that slip past a separator, a backwashing sediment filter or staged cartridge setup keeps fixtures and appliances clean. 4. Sleeve the well with a liner

The standard fix for a failed screen. A properly sized stainless screen and liner can add decades to a well’s life. Expect $3,000 to $7,000 depending on depth and diameter.

5. Replace the pump with sand-resistant equipment

If your pump has been eating sand, it’s likely on borrowed time even after the source is fixed. Protecting Your Pump While You Sort It Out

Maybe you can’t schedule the repair this week. Fair enough. A few moves will limit the damage in the meantime:

  • Shorten heavy pumping sessions. Long irrigation runs at full draw pull the most sand. Split watering into shorter cycles.

  • Flush your pressure tank and water heater. Get the sand out of the tank tee and the heater’s drain valve before it cements in place.
  • Clean aerators and check valves. Clogged screens at fixtures make the pump work harder against restriction.
