The 6 Reasons a Well Pump Won’t Shut Off

These are listed from cheapest to most expensive, which is also roughly the order we check them in.

1. A stuck or failed pressure switch

The pressure switch is the brain of your system, and it’s a $30 part. Inside are electrical contacts that open and close as pressure changes. Those contacts can pit, burn, and weld themselves shut. When they stick closed, the pump gets a “run” signal forever, even with the tank at full pressure.
