Here’s the good news. A well pump making noise is almost always trying to tell you exactly what’s wrong, and most of the time the fix is a lot cheaper than a new pump. The trick is knowing which sounds mean “fix it this week” and which ones mean “shut it off right now.”

First, Figure Out Where the Noise Is Coming From

Before you can decode the sound, you need to know what’s making it. Most well systems around Wenatchee have three places noise can start.

The pipes. Banging, gurgling, and vibration often come from the plumbing, not the pump. Air in the lines and water hammer are the usual suspects here.

Clicking: The Most Common Well Pump Noise (and Often the Cheapest Fix)

One solid click when the pump starts and one when it stops is just your pressure switch doing its job. The problem is rapid or frequent clicking.

Clicking every 30 to 60 seconds

This is the classic sign of short cycling. The pump turns on, hits pressure fast, shuts off, pressure drops fast, and it starts again. Round and round. Nine times out of ten the cause is a waterlogged pressure tank. The air charge inside the tank is gone, so there’s no cushion, and the pump cycles constantly.   • Worn bearings. Pump motor bearings wear out with age, and they fail faster when a pump short cycles for months. Once bearings grind, the motor’s days are numbered.
  • Sand or sediment in the pump. Common around here, especially in wells near the Columbia and Wenatchee rivers and in heavily pumped irrigation areas. Sand chews through impellers like sandpaper.
  • A damaged or loose impeller. Broken impeller pieces rattle around inside the pump housing. You’ll often see reduced pressure along with the noise.

Humming or Buzzing: The Pump Wants to Run but Can’t

A steady hum with no water flowing means the motor is getting power but the shaft isn’t turning. The motor just sits there drawing current, heating up, and cooking itself.

Three common causes:

  1. A failed start capacitor. This little part gives the motor the jolt it needs to start spinning. When it dies, you get a hum and no water. It’s one of the cheapest pump repairs there is.
  2. A seized or stuck impeller. Sediment, scale, or a small rock can jam the impeller so the motor can’t turn it.
  3. A motor that’s seizing. Worn bearings eventually lock the shaft entirely. At that point you’re shopping for a pump.

Sputtering faucets plus a hot summer is worth a water level check.

High-pitched squealing or whining. Bearings again, in an earlier stage than grinding, or a jet pump running dry. Either way it’s a “this month, not this year” repair.

Constant running with a low drone. If the pump never shuts off, you may have a leak, a bad pressure switch, or a well that can’t keep up with demand.   2. Check the pressure gauge. Watch it while the noise happens. Bouncing rapidly between cut-in and cut-out pressure points to a tank or switch issue.
  3. Tap the pressure tank. Knock on it top and bottom. The top should sound hollow, the bottom dull. If it sounds full of water all the way up, the tank is waterlogged.
