Stack it up and a 200-foot well in decent ground lands around $18,000 to $25,000 complete. A 500-foot basalt well with a long trench run can hit $45,000 or more.

What Drives Well Drilling Costs in North Central Washington

Two wells a mile apart can differ by $20,000. Here’s why.

Depth is the biggest lever

Around here, depth swings wildly. Wells down in the Wenatchee and Cashmere valley floors often hit good water at 100 to 200 feet. Get up on the benches above East Wenatchee or out on the Waterville Plateau and 400 to 700 feet is common. At roughly $100 to $150 per finished foot once you add casing, every extra 100 feet is another $10,000 to $15,000. Before you drill, ask the driller to pull well logs from nearby parcels. Washington keeps these records public through the Department of Ecology’s well log database, and a neighbor’s log is the best free prediction you’ll ever get.

Geology: basalt eats drill bits

Much of Douglas and Grant counties sits on Columbia River basalt. It’s hard, abrasive rock that slows the rig and wears tooling, so drillers charge a premium per foot. The flip side is that basalt holds its shape, so you often need less casing. Soft alluvial ground near the rivers drills fast but needs casing most of the way down.

Access and site conditions

A drill rig weighs as much as a loaded dump truck. Steep orchard roads outside Leavenworth, soft spring ground, or a tight building site all add mobilization cost. Winter drilling is possible here but freezing temps add time, and time is money.

Casing and yield

State code requires steel casing through unstable formations and a minimum 18 feet of surface seal. If your well produces marginal flow, the driller may need to drill deeper or develop the well longer to get usable yield. A proper well yield test at completion tells you what the well can actually sustain, and your lender will likely want it documented anyway.

Marv in East Wenatchee bought two acres on the bench above Grant Road in 2025. Neighbor logs showed water around 380 feet. His driller hit a usable aquifer at 410 feet, mostly basalt. Carla near Quincy wasn’t so lucky. Her first bore went 460 feet and came up nearly dry, producing under half a gallon a minute. She paid a negotiated dry-hole rate of about $14,000, then moved the rig 600 feet based on a hydrogeologist’s advice. The second hole hit 12 gallons per minute at 340 feet. Total project: $58,000. A $1,200 site study before the first hole probably would have saved her $14,000.

Pete up the Chumstick outside Leavenworth almost drilled when his 28-year-old well “quit.” Turned out the well was fine. His pump was shot, which is no surprise at that age, since most well pumps last 10 to 15 years. Don’t Forget the Pump System: The Other $5,000 to $12,000

A drilled hole in the ground doesn’t deliver water. The drilling quote usually ends at the well cap, and a lot of homeowners get surprised by the second half of the project.

A complete water system on a new well includes the submersible pump sized to your depth and household demand, drop pipe and wire, a pitless adapter, a pressure tank, a pressure switch, and the buried line to the house. Proper pump sizing matters more than brand. An oversized pump short cycles and dies young. An undersized one leaves you with weak showers forever.

Budget $4,500 to $7,500 for a typical 200-foot setup, and $8,000 to $12,000 for deep wells over 400 feet where heavier pumps, more wire, and more pipe drive the price. Constant-pressure systems add $1,500 to $3,000 but are worth a look on deep wells and homes with irrigation.

Permits, Water Rights, and Washington’s Rules

Washington regulates wells harder than most states, and skipping steps gets expensive fast.

Before drilling, your driller files a Notice of Intent with the Department of Ecology, currently a few hundred dollars in fees. Most single homes drill under the groundwater permit exemption, which allows up to 5,000 gallons per day for domestic use without a formal water right. Counties add their own layer. Chelan, Douglas, and Grant counties all require setbacks from septic systems, property lines, and livestock areas. And once the well is in, the Washington Department of Health recommends testing new wells for bacteria and nitrates before you drink from them. Budget $150 to $400 for a proper lab panel.

One more rule worth knowing: only licensed water well contractors can legally drill in Washington. Verify the license. An unlicensed bore can’t be legally connected, and you’ll pay to decommission it.

You can’t change the geology under your land, but you can control plenty.

Get three bids with per-foot pricing in writing. Make every bid break out drilling, casing, seal, development, and mobilization separately so you’re comparing apples to apples.

Drill in the off season. Some drillers discount late fall and winter work when the schedule thins out. Around here that can mean 5 to 10 percent.

Don’t cheap out on casing or the seal. A saved $2,000 on casing becomes a $10,000 well casing repair when surface water or sand gets in.
