Black Stains: Manganese in Your Well Water

If the ring in your toilet tank looks black, dark brown, or purplish instead of orange, you’re most likely looking at manganese, not iron. The two minerals are chemical cousins and often show up in the same wells, sometimes both staining the same fixture at once, orange near the waterline and black lower down.

Manganese loves porcelain, ice cube trays, and coffee makers, where it builds a stubborn black scale that’s hard to scrub loose. Blue-Green Stains: Copper Corrosion from Low pH

Blue-green staining is the one homeowners recognize least, and it’s usually the most urgent of the four. It shows up as a teal or turquoise ring around drains, faucet bases, and sometimes directly on copper fittings themselves, the same chemistry that turns an old copper penny or a weathered statue green.

The cause almost always traces back to pH. Groundwater that’s naturally acidic, common in parts of Chelan and Douglas counties where water picks up carbon dioxide moving through soil and rock, slowly dissolves copper right out of your pipes.
