7 Signs You’ve Got Hard Well Water
You don’t need a lab to suspect hardness. Your house has been telling you for years.
1. White or chalky crust on faucets and showerheads
That scale at the base of the kitchen faucet and the crusted-over showerhead holes are calcium carbonate. If you’re soaking showerheads in vinegar every few months, your water is hard. Full stop.
2. Spotted dishes and cloudy glassware
Hard water leaves mineral spots as it dries. If glasses come out of the dishwasher looking etched or filmy no matter what detergent you buy, the water is the problem, not the machine.
3. Soap that won’t lather
Calcium binds with soap and forms a sticky curd instead of suds. You use more shampoo, more detergent, more dish soap, and everything still feels filmy. Families on very hard water often use 30 to 50 percent more soap products than they would on soft water.
4. Dry skin and dull, stiff laundry
That same soap curd sticks to skin, hair, and fabric. Towels come out of the dryer stiff and scratchy. Whites turn gray faster.
5. A rumbling or popping water heater

What Hard Water Damage Actually Costs You
Here’s where homeowners get surprised. Hardness doesn’t break things overnight. It quietly shaves years off equipment, and the bill shows up later looking like bad luck.
Your water heater takes the worst of it
Marlene in East Wenatchee called us in February with no hot water. Her electric water heater was six years old, and when we pulled the lower element, it came out wearing an inch of scale, like a fossil. The tank bottom held a couple inches of mineral sludge. The unit should’ve lasted 12 years. It got six, and the replacement ran her $1,450 installed. Her well tested at 17 grains. A softener would’ve cost less than the years she lost off that heater.
The U.S. Department of Energy and water industry studies have found that scale buildup can cut water heater efficiency significantly, because the element has to heat through a rock layer before it heats water. You pay for that on every electric bill, then again at replacement time.
Your pressure tank and pump system feel it too
Scale doesn’t stop at the water heater. It builds up on the pressure switch nipple, inside tank tees, and at check valves. We see plugged pressure switch tubes cause erratic cycling all the time on very hard wells.
Rick out in Quincy replaced his pressure switch twice in one year trying to chase a short cycling problem. The real culprit was a scaled-up switch nipple and a waterlogged tank. Short cycling makes a submersible pump start and stop far more than it’s designed to, and starts are what wear pumps out. His fix was a new pressure tank with a clean tank tee, about $750, plus a softener to keep it from happening again. Cheaper than the $2,800 pump replacement he was headed toward.
The slow stuff: pipes, fixtures, and appliances
Dishwashers and washing machines on very hard water commonly die 2 to 4 years early. Fixture cartridges stick and drip. Aerators clog every few months. None of these is a big check on its own. Add them up over ten years and very hard water can quietly cost a household several thousand dollars.

Never buy a softener based on symptoms alone. Sizing equipment wrong is the most common mistake we see, and it’s avoidable with a $30 to $150 test.
You have three options:
- Test strips from the hardware store. A few dollars, accurate enough to tell you “soft, hard, or very hard.” Fine for a first look.

- Flush your water heater every 6 months. Drain a few gallons from the bottom valve until it runs clear. On very hard water, do it quarterly. This one habit can add years to the tank.
- Drop your water heater to 120°F. Scale forms faster at higher temperatures. You’ll slow buildup and save on electricity.
- Soak aerators and showerheads in white vinegar every couple of months instead of letting them choke down to a trickle.
- Use dishwasher rinse aid and add-in water softening detergent boosters. They’re a band-aid, but a cheap one.
- Keep an eye on your pressure switch behavior. If your pump starts clicking on and off rapidly, scale may be plugging the switch port. That’s a stop-what-you’re-doing call, because rapid cycling kills pumps.
