That surprises a lot of people. Fluoride in well water isn’t something anyone adds on purpose out here. It shows up naturally, and the amount varies wildly from one well to the next, sometimes even between two wells on the same street. Some wells in Chelan, Douglas, and Grant counties have almost none. Others sit high enough to cause real problems.

Why Fluoride Shows Up in Wenatchee-Area Well Water

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. It leaches out of certain rock formations as groundwater moves through them over years or decades. The Columbia River Basalt Group, the layered volcanic rock that underlies much of North Central Washington, is exactly the kind of formation known to release fluoride into the aquifers below it.

That’s different from most other well water contaminants we write about. Nitrates and bacteria usually trace back to something on the surface: septic systems, fertilizer, livestock. Fluoride comes from underneath, from the rock itself. You can’t fix the source. You can only test for it and treat the water if the number is too high.

Wells drilled deeper into basalt formations tend to show more fluoride than shallow wells pulling from sand and gravel aquifers. That doesn’t mean deep wells are automatically bad. Plenty of deep basalt wells in the Wenatchee area test completely normal. City water systems that fluoridate control the dose. Municipal treatment plants dial fluoride to the level public health agencies recommend for cavity prevention, currently 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L), and they monitor it constantly. Well water has no such control. Whatever concentration is naturally in your aquifer is what comes out of your tap, whether that’s zero or well above what’s considered safe. Nobody’s adjusting it, and nobody’s watching it change over time unless you test it yourself.

That cuts both ways. Plenty of wells in our service area have low or undetectable fluoride, which means kids on those wells might benefit from a fluoride supplement their dentist recommends. Other wells run high enough that the household needs to actively reduce fluoride intake. You genuinely can’t guess which side of that line your well falls on without a test.

How Much Fluoride Is Too Much? Health Effects Explained

The EPA sets two separate numbers for fluoride, and the difference matters.

The enforceable limit, called the maximum contaminant level, is 4.0 mg/L. Drinking water above that level over a lifetime is linked to skeletal fluorosis, a bone and joint condition that develops slowly from years of high exposure. It’s rare in the U.S., but it’s the reason the limit exists.

The secondary standard, which is a guideline rather than a hard rule, is 2.0 mg/L. Above that level, kids under 8 whose teeth are still forming are at risk for dental fluorosis, which shows up as white spots, streaks, or in severe cases brown staining and pitting on permanent teeth. It’s cosmetic, not dangerous to overall health, but it’s permanent once the teeth come in, and most parents would rather avoid it entirely. For adults, low to moderate fluoride exposure isn’t something to lose sleep over. The people who need to pay closest attention are households with young kids, especially if formula is being mixed with well water, since infants get a concentrated, repeated dose during exactly the window when their teeth are developing.

Two Local Wells, Two Fluoride Surprises

Renee and her husband bought a place outside Cashmere in 2023 with two young kids. Their home inspection covered flow rate but skipped water quality testing entirely. Eighteen months later, their pediatric dentist flagged mild white mottling on their four-year-old’s front teeth at a routine checkup and asked point-blank if they were on well water. A full panel came back at 2.6 mg/L fluoride, over the secondary standard. They installed an under-sink reverse osmosis system for $650 and now run all drinking and cooking water through it. The mottling on the baby teeth won’t reverse, but it stopped there.

Up in Leavenworth, Dale had been on the same well for over a decade with no issues he knew of. How to Remove Fluoride From Well Water

This is where a lot of homeowners get tripped up, because the most common home water treatment devices don’t touch fluoride at all. A standard carbon filter, including the pitcher filters everyone keeps in the fridge, will not remove it. Neither will a conventional water softener, since softeners are built to swap out calcium and magnesium, not fluoride ions.

For most families with a moderately elevated result, an under-sink reverse osmosis unit is the practical starting point. Since fluoride comes from geology and not from anything happening on your property, there’s no prevention step that changes the source the way there is for nitrates or bacteria. Your job is knowing your number and treating accordingly.

A few practical habits make a real difference:

Test before you assume, especially with kids in the house. If you’ve got a baby on formula, young kids with developing teeth, or a pregnancy in the family, get a fluoride test done rather than guessing. It’s a small cost against a permanent outcome.
